Costa Rica

OST 695 – Global Health: Costa Rica – Pre-Clinical Observation, Culture and Medicine (3 Credits)
  • Course Summary: Through didactic lectures and immersive experiences, this study abroad course will enable students to develop better knowledge and understanding of the Spanish language, Costa Rica biodiversity and its challenges, Latin American culture, One Health approach and health issues, healthcare practices and the healthcare system in the country. This course is designed to enlighten students on issues of community and public health and healthcare systems with relevance on the transdisciplinary focus of One Health and displaced people in the Latin American region.

Dominican Republic 

OST 690 – Global Health: Dominican Republic – Clinical Immersion (3 Credits) 
  • Course Summary: OST 690 Global Health: Dominican Republic – Clinical Immersion is a 3 credit-hour elective that provides students with an understanding of culture, history, and healthcare delivery system in the Dominican Republic. The primary goal of the one-week course is to introduce students to the health care delivery model in Batayes of the Dominican Republic and exploring common causes of morbidity on the rural areas.

  • Course Duration: 1 week 
OST 690 - Global Health: Dominican Republic-Pre-Clinical Observation (3 Credits) 
  • Course Summary: OST 690 Global Health: Dominican Republic – Pre-Clinical Observation is a 3 credit-hour elective that provides students with an understanding of the culture, history and the healthcare delivery system in the Dominican Republic. The primary goal of the one-week course is to introduce students to the health care delivery in hospitals and specialty clinics in Santo Domingo.

  • Course Duration: 1 week 

Mexico 

OST 686 – Global Health: Mexico – Clinical Immersion (3 Credits) 
  • Course Summary: The elective provides students with an opportunity to actively engage in patient-based learning experiences under the guidance of a clinician preceptor in collaboration, as appropriate, with interns, residents and/or fellows. The course goals include enriching students’ understanding of Mayan/Mexican culture. In addition, students should develop an understanding of endemic diseases and the healthcare delivery system in the Yucatan. Course participants include those students interested in the Spanish language, Mayan/Mexican culture and health care.

Nepal 

OST 694 – Global Health – One Health Nepal (6 Credits) 
  • Course Summary: Enriching students’ understanding of the One Health concept which is the recognition of the interconnected nature of humans, animals and the environment, and the direct impact each system has on the other. This program will allow students to see and experience the interconnected nature of these systems and then work on a project which involves at least two of the systems. In a broad sense, students will try to understand health and disease through the interdisciplinary lens of One Health while exploring the unique culture of Nepal.

  • Course Dates: TBA – generally late December 
  • Course Duration: 2 weeks 

Peru 

OST 687 – Global Health: Peru – Clinical Immersion (3 Credits) 
  • Course Summary: The elective is designed to enhance the student’s understanding of Peru’s healthcare system, to provide students with opportunities for improving their personal/professional skills and to experience operating in a different cultural context and to actively engage in patient-based, learning experiences under the supervision of licensed U.S. physicians working in tandem with local providers. 
  • Perquisites: Students need to be second-year medical students or fourth-year medical students. 
  • Course Dates: TBA – generally July 
  • Course Duration: 13 days 

Spain 

OST 696 – Global Health: Spain – Pre-Clinical Observation, Culture and Medicine in Barcelona (3 Credits) 
  • Course Summary: Global Health: Spain- Pre-Clinical Observation, Culture and Medicine in Barcelona is a 3-credit hour course that provides students with an opportunity to actively engage in patient-based, learning experiences under the guidance of a clinician preceptor in collaboration, as appropriate, with interns, residents and/or fellows. The course goals include enriching students’ understanding of Spanish culture, the concept of Global Health and current country needs on the global mobility of displaced people. In addition, students should develop an understanding of endemic diseases and healthcare delivery system (public vs private) in Spain. 
  • Prerequisites: None 
  • Course Dates: TBA – generally in June 
  • Course Duration: 9 days
